My Ice Cream Maker...Works For Me Wednesday

Why I let this wedding gift sit unused for 6 years, I'll never know. This baby works for me!!! If you have an ice cream maker sitting in a box in the back of your cabinet, now is the time to break it out! If you don't have one, well, you might need one! :)
Homemade ice cream was like a revelation to me. It's a little like homemade bread; once you taste homemade, you never want to to back.

And, it's EASY!!! The kids can help, the mix-ins are limitless...and even the mistakes taste good!

Two of my favorite ice cream books are Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert Book and The Ultimate Ice Cream Book. Both are great resources and have more recipes than you could ever make. (The Ultimate Ice Cream Book has a recipe for chocolate sorbet that is fat-free...not that we care about those things...and utterly decadent!)

My favorite ice cream EVER is Jerry's Chocolate from the Ben & Jerry's book. (This is the ice cream I served with the coconut cake a few posts back.)

Here we made it and added cookie dough chunks.
Before:

After:

It's not all about chocolate, though...don't forget Key Lime Pie ice cream!

Keep the ice cream freezer canister in the freezer and you'll always be ready to whip up a batch. (I line mine with a piece of plastic wrap to prevent it picking up other smells from the freezer.)

What your favorite ice cream flavor?

Be sure to check out all of the Works For Me Wednesday tips and idea at We Are THAT Family. Here are some oldies, but goodies from me:

  4. I have one of those makers, maybe a little different, but basically the same one. The bad thing was I didn't use it because I had no good recipe for homemade ice cream. I am definitely going to see if B&N has either (or both) of those books, seeing that ice cream is a food group at our house and all.

    Thanks for sharing!

  8. Oh my gosh, I totally agree - I broke out mine last week and I can't believe we've never really used it before. We made plain old vanilla ice cream - but I chopped up strawberries and tossed them in. Delish!!

  11. I just added those two books to my wishlist :) I just recently started using my little dream machine again, I'm thinking of trying to make a new ice cream every week this summer. (Better throw in some sherbets too or I won't be able to fit out my door!)

  13. Yummy! I love homemade ice cream. I have great childhood memories of going to family reunions where they was plenty of the homemade good stuff!

Sidenote question: Where do you find coconut cream at the store? All I found was coconut milk which I'm thinking is not the same thing and I'm dying to make your coconut cake.

  14. I have that same ice cream maker and love it! I also have an extra canister so that I can make more than one batch at a time. Luckily I have a big chest freezer in the garage so I have plenty of rum. Instead of lining mine I put them in giant baggies and maker certain they are completely dry.

  15. I recently discovered our ice cream maker (same as yours). I got it as a shower gift about 7 years ago. It's been sitting in the closet. I figured...that must be hard to do.
About a month ago I took it out and my 4 1/2 yr old and I made vanilla ice cream. (I started simple!) It was so good and the important part is that I knew what was in it! I'll have to check out these new flavors. Thanks!

  18. We got an ice cream machine last summer for our anniversary but we didn't use it until recently. The boy made vanilla that was marvelous. Then I made peanut butter w/pb cups chopped mixed in. That was divine!!

We are planning to make more soon, infact I probably should get my kids to plan on doing that tomorrow.

I like the tip about lining it with plastic, I'll try that next time.

  21. Jessica...look in the "international" section or the "drink mixer" section at the grocery store. It is a little hard to find, but it should be there. :)

    Ingrid...love that baggie idea!

    TidyMom...click on the link to Jerry's Ice Cream...there's a recipe. :)

  22. I have that exact ice cream maker - we registered for it when we got married last year. It was our favorite gift. The non cranking non salt and non ice needs compared to the one we had growing up is FABULOUS. I make mint chocolate chip (without the green food dye) out of the recipe book that came with the maker and that seems to be the most popular. Hint: If you use choc chips instead of chopping chocolate, use the mini chips because they get hard after being frozen. It's easier to eat hard mini chips than it is to eat the hard big chips!
