Sweet on Trader Joe's Sunday : Pumpkin Caramel Danish Kringle

Kringle must be a regional delicacy. In Texas, we have kolaches, but no kringle.

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Caramel Danish Kringle, reviewed!
A few days ago, I was in Trader Joe's pretty much scanning each and every aisle for pumpkin anything. (Pumpkin O's are back. I bought 8 boxes...only because 12 seemed like too much. I'll be back.)

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Caramel Danish Kringle, reviewed!
This Pumpkin Caramel Danish Kringle caught my eye. I found it in the section near the baked goods. The kringle package is big, and fairly flat...a large waxed paper-like bag. A 24-ounce kringle costs $7.99.

A mom's (my) take: I had no idea what to expect from a kringle, so I was excited to open the package and slide out a huge, oval, frosted pastry. The pastry itself it flaky and buttery. The filling is generous and chock-full of pumpkin and spices. (Pumpkin is the 2nd ingredient listed on the label, so if you are a pumpkin lover...and not just a lover of "pumpkin spice," you're going to be happy.) The frosting is a beautiful caramel glaze studded with pecans. Here's another thing I learned about kringles...do NOT open a package when you are home alone. You'll be tempted to eat all 12 servings by yourself.
Overall rating: 5 of 5 stars

A teenager's (Jack's) take: For those of you excited that pumpkin-flavored things are back in season, this won't disappoint. The pumpkin hits you from the first bite and stays with you the whole way through. I love the croissant-y base, and the salted caramel comes through surprisingly well. The sugary glaze is a great finish. The only drawback, if this even is one, is the messy quality in eating it; use napkins! Unless you're a kid, then there's no point even trying... :)
Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

  2. I bought one of these last week. I'm from Wisconsin originally and am well versed in Kringle. We make a point of getting a few whenever we go home for the holidays. This flavor is so good...I'm hoping there will be more in the stores this fall.

  4. I buy this every year and it is delicious! They freeze very well. I think Trader Joe's carries them only a few times a year. They have pecan in the spring around Easter and then another flavor again before Christmas.

  6. This looks incredibly dangerous! If I buy one and eat all the servings at once, (or even more than one serving at a time) I am totally blaming you, Bridget! Just kidding, even though I wish they would put a TJ's closer to my home (closest ones are both about a 25 minute drive), it's probably best that they don't do it, for reasons like this pastry you are reporting on! Based on the distance, I don't go there often.

  7. OMG! I was in Trader Joe's yesterday as well looking for everything pumpkin! I went espcially for the Harvest Salad (with a pumpkin vinegrette and pumpkin or cornbread croutons I can't recall which) OMG that salad is so yummy but, they did not have them yet! BOO! I have tried the kringle in pumpkin and almond! Both are so yummy. I actually cut mine up and froze some! I even found a cute TShirt at the pinners conference and it says #pumpkineverything. LOL
