Sweet on Trader Joe's Saturday: Sweet, Hot and Savory Nut Mix

trader joe's sweet, hot, and savory nut mix review : part of a weekly review series of tj's desserts and treats
Writing this post is helping me ignore the fact that OU is currently losing to Texas. C'mon, Sooners!!!

OK. Let's get to the food. This week, we're reviewing Trader Joe's Sweet, Hot, and Savory. It's a mix of nuts described as "honey roasted cocoa & chili peanuts & almonds with roasted salted pecans." A 14-ounce bag costs....well, honestly, I'm not sure because I can't find my receipt. Anyway, you'll find them near the cash registers.

A mom's (my) take: These were an impulse buy...they were right by the register. I saw the words "cocoa, chili, and pecans" and grabbed them. Here's the deal, the base of this snack mix is honey roasted nuts. I don't like honey roasted nuts. I like honey; I like nuts; I like roasting. Not together. If you're a fan of honey roasted nuts, I think you'll like these. The cocoa and chili (shouldn't it be chile?) add a depth of flavor, while not adding too much spice. With regular roasted nuts, minus the honey roasting, this mix might be a hit with me.
Overall rating: 3 of 5 stars

A teenager's (Jack's) take: I am usually a fan of trail mixes, or any type of mixes all together. I was anticipating this to be very flavorful and maybe even too much for me (judging by the title). At least to me, it was thoroughly underwhelming. Not much flavor is present besides a simple nutty one, until the very end, where a somewhat spicy flavor comes out (although it's so delayed, it seems almost like an aftertaste). I cannot pick out the "Sweet" part at all.
Overall rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Trader Joe's Sweet, Hot, and Savory: we'll pass.

[note: We have no affiliation with Trader Joe's. I'm sure they have never read this blog and have no idea who we are. Hey, we like being incognito, although we never wear sunglasses indoors. ;)]

Here's what else we're loving this week:

  1. It's very fun that you & Jack rate these yummies as a team. Thanks for this review, as I would be highly likely to succumb to this temptation at the checkout! I love nuts, honey roasted or not, salted a plus, mixed with dried fruit: yes, etc.

  2. Bridget, I looked for your e-mail, but didn't find it. So, after MANY months, perhaps a year, I'm thanking you for the IKIA clips that I won. They have saved me SO MUCH TIME. When I decorate cookies with my granddaughter's school classes, I was filling pastry bags, putting them in Ziplocks and taping each one closed....took forever. Then, clean up too a while too. The clips are fast, easy, and THEY WORK. Thank you for showing me a better way. Love your blog....especially when you are making and decorating cookies. You are very talented, love what you do, and it shows!! I wish CookieCon would be closer....I would LOVE to go and take some classes. Rachel Georgetown, TX

    1. Hi Rachel! Thanks so much for your sweet comment, but I think you must have won those from another blog. I've never used them. :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! Happy baking! :)
