Sweet on Trader Joe's Saturday: Cookie Butter ICE CREAM

I feel like we should sound the trumpets for this week's Trader Joe's dessert review.  When I posted this picture on Instagram, I think it garnered more comments than any other picture I've ever posted:

This week, we review...Trader Joe's COOKIE BUTTER ICE CREAM!!!  Yep.  It's a real thing.

If you're not familiar with cookie butter (I'm sorry), get yourself to Trader Joe's and buy some, or to your local grocery store and pick up some Biscoff Spread.  Now.

The ice cream is swirled with both cookie butter and speculoos cookies.  A 1-quart container costs $4.49.

I was pretty sure I would love this...note the Valentine tea towel.  I don't break out my Valentine linens for just any ol' dessert. ;)

A mom's (my) take:  I can't believe I'm saying this...I didn't like it.  I didn't get a strong flavor of either the cookie butter or the speculoos cookies.  The ice cream base itself wasn't very creamy.  This is going to save me a lot of calories, but it makes me kind of sad.
Overall rating: 2 of 5 stars

A teenager's (kiddo's) take: The ice cream is very sweet, and the cookie/cookie butter bits sprinkled throughout provide for somewhat of a balance... But, I'd have to agree with my mom on this one: there really isn't much of a flavor besides pure sweetness (if you're a fan of that, go right ahead!), and if I hadn't known the name of it, I couldn't have even guessed what kind of ice cream this is. I definitely don't taste any cookies, so maybe TJ's should consider changing the name...
Overall rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Trader Joe's Cookie Butter Ice Cream: you might be better off sticking with straight up cookie butter. :(

  1. Thanks for the review, you two! I ALMOST bought some of this ice cream yesterday, but I'm glad I didn't. I trust your pair of discriminating palates:)

  2. Like you said B, this make me infinitely sad and relieved all at the same time. But just you wait, someone's gonna come along and get it right :)

  3. Thanks for saving me all those calories. I think a bowl of good vanilla ice cream with a side of crunchy cookie butter is a much better idea!

  4. I am kind of sad about this. I have wanted that ice cream for a while now. The closest TJs isn't too close so I never get the ice cream desserts. I guess I won't feel like I am missing out on this one.

  5. Too bad the ice cream isn't good - I made a No-Churn Biscoff/Lotus/Speculoos Ice Cream recently which turned out great, if you want to give it a try: http://www.missoverballe.com/?p=4864

  6. I guess I'll just stick with the always amazing Blue Bell options. (Simply saving the calories and not eating ice cream isn't a viable option).

  7. I noticed this at TJ's the other day and thankfully, was not the least bit tempted. I am not a cookie butter fan...it seems like such a total waste of calories with zero nutritional benefit. I am not surprised this ice cream product is a dud. Thanks for the review.

  9. Thanks for the honest review. Sometimes it seems some people "just love" everything they try. That just doesn't seem possible.

  10. Ohhh! Controversial! I'm actually not a big fan of TJ cookie butter. I prefer crunchy Biscoff.

  11. What a disappointment. The TJ cookie butter is so yummy, you think they'd knock the ice cream out of the park.

  12. I have never heard of cookie butter, let along cookie butter ice cream, but something tells me I am missing out! Something to get my eye out for next time I'm in the USA! :)

  13. I'm glad it's not just me! I tried it too and was very underwhelmed. It's way too sweet and left a weird greasy feeling on my tongue.

  14. so I have to tell you about our latest treat each evening lately..... I bought the TJ Cookie butter with coca, and we've been adding a dollop to our (low fat) vanilla ice cream and crushing a graham cracker over it and stir it up! OMG SOOO good. ;)
