Guilty.

I am one of *those* people.  My emails are littered with :) and ;).  (Not to mention all of the ... and !!!.)

Those little faces are called Emoticons. And I'm addicted to them.  I can't help myself.  {And, yes, I recall going through a stage of dotting my i's with little hearts.}

So, when I saw this card at Target a few weeks ago, I knew those little emoticons needed to be made into cookies.
(Except, I made the cookies in white.  I might overuse my emoticons, but I don't mess with the background color.  So there.)

These are probably the easiest cookies you will ever make.

First, I cut out the cookies with my square cutter, then divided it into smaller squares with a bench scraper...just like I did here for the Scrabble cookies.

The baked and cooled cookies were then outlined and filled in royal icing tinted with AmeriColor Bright White.

{Oops, I put that heart <3 in there backwards.}

The "smileys," as I like to call them, were added using a 1.5 tip from PME, but you could use any #1 or #2 tip. (Black icing was tinted with AmeriColor Super Black.)

So, fess up.  Are you a lover of emoticons as well?
What's your favorite? ;)

  1. Love these cookies! I must admit that I have quite an obsession with emoticons. I even said that someone was going to have to do an emoticon intervention if I don't stop. :)

See...I can't help it. My fave emoticon is :P

  2. ah yes, I'm guilty too :) I use the smiley all the time. Even tried to stop and just cant'! Very cute cookies, love the size of them :)

  3. I use emoticons like they are going out of style! There are always ":D" all over, and it gets embarassing when I finish multiple sentences in a row with them!

  4. Super cute cookies! I admit that I love emoticons too! Both western style and Japanese style emoticons. Like this one: (*≧▽≦)

  7. I'm also one of "those" people ;P I actually hate it when I have to write an email to someone whom I need to be professional with, feels very formal!

Might have to try these as they look so simple :) xo

  11. When I was just a professional...before I became a professional mommy (and blogger!)...I never used emoticons. But there's something about social media that just makes it seem like the cool thing to do, no? ;)

[I also never started sentences with "but", but I'm there, too.]

  12. Those are so sweet! I, too, find it hard to write anything without adding a :-D or a ;-P (my fave) and there are always lots of .... in between. And mine always have to have a nose!

  13. I use them all the time - which makes the people who know me giggle, because they would all swear I'm not an emoticon kind of girl. I definitely overuse :P I'm thinking there might be a self-help group for this somewhere...

  14. Bridget it is so funny to me that you posted this! My emoticon addiction began when I joined twitter. Also I feel the need to LOL at everything. I am a big laugher "in real life" too but why can I not complete a thought without it? While I'm confessing I should admit that I also think in hashtags. :O

  15. I'm an over user of the smiley face. I can't help it...and you know, I don't think I smile in real life nearly as much as I do in emails!!

    Love the cookies...adorable!!

  16. The best thing about smileys is they help convey the tone of what you are writing. You can use sarcasm. LOL

  17. so stinkin' cute - and in fact, these are cookies even i, the baking-challenged, might be able to pull off!

  21. So so great. I'll post a link on Edible Crafts :). (Yes, I use emoticons, but just the smiley! They really are so very perfect to spice up such bland, typed words that can't possibly do the job of conveying sentiment.)

  22. These are great and clever, as usual ;)

I am guilty of overusing :) I didn't realize there are SO many emoticons! I have been under-expressing myself, ha ha!

  23. Adorable cookie idea...so cute! Oh, and for the record...I love your little heart you put before your name in your emails.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am a guilty emoticon-er too! It's not a real message without at least one of these :) or these :P

Love the cookies. So many cute ideas come from cards.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I myself usually don't send emails with much expression and excitement~so I don't ever use the emoticons.

    Ah....haha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Just kidding!!!!!!!!!!! :) ;) :) ;)
I can't sign my name to this day without putting a big HEART beside it! No kidding. When I sign something official I have to concentrate to keep from placing the BIG heart on the signature~
Did you say you "USE" to use a HEART to dot your "i's"?
    Well I still do!!! ;o)
    Can you get over that!
I also put clouds around everything!
And of course I went through the DOT letters phase.
In college I had a best friend who I thought could do "dot" letters better than me. She thought I did them better than her~we made big banners with dot letter words and we would always say~ "no....yours look better!" ;)
When I taught first grade all of my students started putting clouds and hearts on their papers when they turned in work~so CUTE! Can you imagine what their teacher thought the following year when they turned in a spelling test with a big puffy cloud around their name and a HEART! ;)
    So yes!!!!
I am guilty on this one!
    Guilty beyond belief.
    LOVE these cute cookies!
Wish I had one with my coffee right now~ ;)
    xoxoxoxoxoxoxooxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox~
Is that enough hugs and kisses for you?

  27. Very cute - and love that you got the idea from a greeting card!

When I saw these I was wondering if you had done anything with dominoes. I did a search on your web site, but didn't get a hit.

I have a group of friends who are avid Mexican Train Dominoes players and would love to see your take on color dot dominoes!

  28. That's funny, because I too am super addicted to using little smileys and such... even worse is that I do it all over facebook! :/ But I just love them... because how else can you really accurately tell a person your mood through type? With a smiley! :)
I love these cookies, though. Super cute.

My best friend and I never cease to get a laugh at how the emoticons translate to faces on AIM (back in the day when we actually had time to instant message) We love the sunglasses one 8-) and the money face and zipper face..lolol :-$ Oh and I totally used hearts to dot my i's. Until one day in high school when I got in trouble for doing it (all girls Catholic school..you know how that is)

Those cookies are so adorable. I've always wondered...what do you do with all the cookies you make?

I'd like to try my hand at some, but I can't eat all those cookies. Well, I can but it wouldn't be pretty...
