Sam's Club & PINK Velvet Cake Balls . . . Works for Me Wednesday

{We're going to get to these in a minute.}

A year ago, I might not have written this post.  I had let my Sam's Club membership expire.  I'll be honest.....we went in 3 times a year and bought beer and giant boxes of potstickers.

Then, last month, I was offered a tour of our newly remodeled Sam's Club.  I was impressed.

First, the store is much more open.  They added a center aisle and there are no more trampolines hanging from the ceiling.  (Those things always scared me.)

Second, they started listening to shoppers like us.  Moms, bloggers....people coming in for personal shopping, not stocking a concession stand.

The result....the produce section has doubled in size.  You want apples?!?  They have seven kinds!  Including my beloved Honeycrisp.

And vanilla extract with NO ADDED CORN SYRUP!!!  Yay!

Pumpkin shortage? What pumpkin shortage?!?

Now, this was when I decided to renew my membership....
Ghiradelli Chocolate for dipping and candy making.  Hello, cake balls!  (Or cake truffles...whatever you prefer.)

I used it to make some Pink Velvet cake balls and really preferred it to candy melts.  It's super smooth and dries shiny!

{Pink Velvet Cake Balls: vanilla cake with AmeriColor Deep Pink food coloring.}

And an idea for the leftover chocolate...

Oh. And then there is this.
Yeah. Sam's carries this Cheesecake Factory Red Velvet Cheesecake.  Let me break it down for you:

Red Velvet Cake,
Cheesecake,
White Chocolate.
Stick one in your freezer and always be prepared for company.  Or PMS.

{PS. Sam's Club did NOT ask me to blog about the club or compensate me for writing this post.  The opinions...and the weight gained from the cheesecake...are my own.}

Do you belong to a Membership Club?  What is your favorite item to buy there?
works for me wednesday at we are that family

  1. We have a membership to Costco and Sam's both. I have to say that I like Costco more, precisely for the reasons that Sam's is now makng changes. Costco has a great produce section, bakery, and seems to cater more toward the home shopper.

  2. It's just the two of us and we've had a membership at Sam's for a couple of years. I love their big bucket of animal crackers.

  3. We have memberships to both Sams and Costco. They are both so different. I like Sam's pizza better than Costco's. I also like Sam's produce section.

  4. Thats so funny that you just posted this because my husband and I just got our Sams club membership and I over looked all of these lovely items! I sometimes think that CostCo holds a bigger place in my heart but maybe because I only went there until now! I love all the samples at both places the best lol

  5. Love Sam's. Love pink balls covered in chocolate. Love it when you send over cookies :) xoxo

  6. Hahaha! This is so funny because that melt and poor chocolate is one of the main reasons that I love Sam's Club. That chocolate is head and shoulders over the standard melt and poor. Last time I was in I picked up white chocolate. I can't wait to try it. :)

  7. Your pink cake balls are beautiful against the dark chocolate! Love them.

You could dye the cake batter almost any colour to match any occasion. (Valentine's, Christmas, 4th of July yada yada yada:)

We don't have SAMS's here, we have Costco and yes, we are members.

Love what you did with the extra chocolate too!

  8. Pink cake?! Seriously, what more could a girl ask for?

  9. Love the "Always be prepared for company. Or PMS." And while this may be TMI, since I'm riding the peri-meneopause wave, I'm always barely skirting the PMS curl. Thanks for the tip!

  15. These are so pretty - I have always thought about making pink velvet! And we have a Sam's membership. Love it, altho we just get boring things there like chicken and water. Their baked goods are great too!

  16. I would tell you what my favorite is but you named it all!!! I have recently bought all the same items that you did! I love the Honeycrisps. I spend all year waiting for the good chocolate to come out. FYI-STOCK UP! They only carry it at Christmas.

  21. Sam's and Costco have become great places to shop! Pink is my favorite color so I LOVE the pink cake balls :)

  22. I just recently purchased a membership at Sam's club (and I am anti-Wal Mart, go figure), and I was amazed at the changes that were made to the store. I haven't been in a Sam's warehouse for, I'd say, 10 years. Sam's club comes in very handy for the baking blog, and I was able to list my blog as a business. YAYYYYY!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh my, Bridget - those pink velvet cake balls just made my morning! So adorable.

I have a BJ's membership and stock up on baking ingredients, Greek yogurt, and snack foods! :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love Sam's! I think my husband would spend the night there if he could. My mother just bought an entire case of the Ghirardelli white chocolate for all her holiday baking! And I love the pink velvet cake balls! I'm cake ball/pop obsessed so I can't wait to try these!

  25. We have a Sam's membership and I have to say that I too LOVE the Ghiradelli Chocolate for dipping and candy making:) And I love how their Vanilla Exctract is SO big and for a good $

  26. I'm a Costco fan. I grew up with it and now shop there with hubby. I don't know, there's something so comforting to walk down each of the aisles and look at all the sparkly things. :-P Thing is, we end up with more things than we anticipated getting, but the coupons they send out are definitely useful!

    ReplyDelete
  27. We don't have a Sam's near us :-( but I have to say....I'm in LOVE with those pink Velvet cake balls!! did you you cream cheese frosting or vanilla?

    ReplyDelete
  28. we do costco around me, but very similar...love the pink velvet cake balls....i just did pink velvet cupcakes recently when I found a recipe someone posted. Fun!

  32. I would love the recipe for your cake balls?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow, those cake truffles look so smooth! Was there really that much of a difference using the Ghiradelli? That's amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Love going to Sam's, mostly for the Ghirradellis, but also easy way to get ready for hurricane season!
I must try to make some cake balls this Thanksgiving or Christmas, they look tasty. Thanks for the post.

  35. We have a membership to Sam's Club and like it for all the reasons I post here: http://gabbyrm.blogspot.com/2010/10/sams-club-trip-with-cady.html. I hope we have some of those products at ours! I'd love to try that chocolate!

  40. Love the pink cake balls! Yes, we have a Sam's card, and most often I buy the bags of Tyson chicken breast tenders, brown & powdered sugar, paper products, plastic storage items, and they have the best inexpensive half-sheet pans.

  41. I am so happy you're back to loving your Sam's Club! Personally, I am a die-hard, won't-step-a-toe-into-Sam's-Club, COSTCO girl!

But I am still happy to see that your Sam's is treating you right... Because they better!

Your cake balls are gorgeous, and that's all that really matters!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hi!! Sam's is great! I love stocking up on things other than foods(T.P., papertowels, etc.)-the food is just a bonus:)

Your cake balls are SO gorgeous! And they look so yummy! How did you make them so the cake batter wasn't so runny, but that it stuck together in a ball? You're so talented!!

  43. Those cake balls look amazing, I love the pink velvet cake! Yes, I have a Sam's Club membership and normally go there to get some baking needs like 5 pound bags of confectioner's sugar or mass quantities of butter! I didn't see pumpkin at my local Sam's but I may have to go back now and see if they have it, if so I'm stocking up!

  44. Just to throw it out there b/c no one else has, we are now BJ's Club members. After being sadden by the Costco here in Charlotte and b/c of the fact their Enfamil formula is super cheap (compared to Target), they take manufacturers coupons (they are the only club to do so), and they sell over 20 Perdue Chicken items (my employer) we made the switch (plus they really cater to the home shopper). But I have been members at all 3.

    ReplyDelete
  45. yep, we do! and that's my secret chocolate ;) hope the honeycrisp's are at my sam's!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. We belong to Sam's Club, and pretty much buy large quantities of fruit and water... and now I'll have to add Ghiradelli melting chocolate and Cheesecake Factory Red Velvet Cheesecake. I HOPE ours has both!!!
    Thanks for sharing =)

    ReplyDelete
  47. We don't have Sams Club here but I love Costco. We buy a lot there, bread, tortillas, fruit, dried fruit, veggies, cheese, meat.... I could go on...

I don't know if they have the CF cheesecake, but I'm gonna look!

    ReplyDelete
  48. LOVE the cake balls~I might need to make the pumpkin ones for one of the desserts at T-giving dinner :)

  49. I'm in Houston too and the Sam's by me had Pumpkin Cheesecake the last time I was there. Yep, I have 2 in the freezer waiting for Thanksgiving right now!

I'm going to have to look for the Ghiradelli chocolate next time I'm there. Can I ask which Sam's in Houston you go to?

    ReplyDelete
  50. some of those products are really impressive! i am a huge costco fan and have been eyeing their red velvet cake for a while, but i just know if i buy it without other people around i'll get myself in a lot of trouble!!

  51. how did you do the coating for the cake balls. do you have a recipe. can we do with candy melts. will that come out shiny. please suggest.also is th ecake from box mix
    thanks

  52. I belong to both Sam's Club and Costco. I love Sams for their photo lab and books/magazines and Costco for their better selection of items that my family enjoys eating. I hope Sam's Club will step up because they are much closer to me than Costco!

    ReplyDelete
  53. There's no Sam's Club near me...I am a Costco fan, but I'm a first time visitor to your blog, and wow, is it delectable!

Too bad I'm GFCF, but a girl can dream, right?

  56. Since moving to Texas I have resisted joining a Sam's Club down here, but stocking up on things that we really need and really like is appealing to me. Plus, now with 4 growing children things don't last long around here. Also, I just made some Halloween Oreo balls and was wondering about the integrity of the candy melts. Think I'll use real chocolate next time. Thanks!

  57. Red Velvet Cheesecake - SWOON - I have never heard of such a thing and soooo feel like I have been missing out.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I have a bj's wholesale membership, hubby gets a discount with his job. I love that i can use coupons(unlike sam's at the time we were looking) and you can stack their coupons with manufactures. I tend to get friday night pizza stuff there(frozen pizzas and frozen snacks) I also like bottle drinks there too(stuff that you can get coupons for like gatorade) There rest depends on what i need and have coupons for.

  59. I have been eye-ing that cheesecake for a while now in my local store. It looks AMAZING!

  61. I love Sam's and soon we're getting a Costco and I will have a membership to that one too but I do know I love bag huge bags of chocolate chips and the huge bags of powdered sugar. I wish they carried unbleached flour though.

  62. My Sam's favs... two loaves of french bread for $2 and change (perfect for making peach french toast casserole), Eggland's Best Eggs, Lara Bars ( yummy, just dates and nuts) and right now; it's seasonal so GO GET SEVERAL BOXES...Cinnabon Muffin Mix!!!

  63. Living in the hometown of Sam's Club, with many friends employed by them, I may forward your post! Thought you might like to know that they sell more RV Cheesecakes than Cheesecake Factory! Also, they are now stocking unbleached flour for the holiday! Yeah!I too love their half sheet baking pans.

  73. I just piggybacked off my daughter's membership there. That store can be lethal, and you can easily go in and scarf down a whole meal with all the samples. They carry (used to) chicken burgers with carmelized onions and swiss cheese. OMG they were so good! Now they've decided to no longer carry them. Oh well, more room in my cart for chocolate!

  74. Hi..went through all your truffle recipes...dying to try them out.
i wanna know though your recipe for the chocolate. is it out a box or from-the-scratch?

  75. Costco is the greatest! They even have their own brand of fair trade chocolate chips now! I always thought pink velvet was just lighter red velvet, thanks for clarifying, I will definitely be trying these!
