Taking Food Pictures at Night . . . Works for Me Wednesday

works for me wednesday at we are that family

My favorite food pictures are ones taken outside or near a window with good light.  But a lot of times, I make cookies at night.  I wanted to take pictures for tutorials, but didn't like posting pictures with terrible nighttime lighting on the blog.

Then I read a post over at Steamy Kitchen about the Lowel Ego Digital Imaging Light.  I bought one...and it works for me.  Let me show you the difference.

This picture was taken at night WITHOUT the light:

This picture was taken at night WITH the light:
Both pictures were edited...brightness and contrast adjusted...but can you see the difference?

What didn't work for me?  The price. $88!  I don't know about you, but if I have an extra $88, I'm getting a cheap pedicure, a cute new pair of shoes, a Starbucks and a cupcake. (Not necessarily in that order.)

I got this for FREE!  Yes, FREE!  Have you heard of Swagbucks?  I heard bloggers talking about it for months before I signed up.  All you do is use Swagbucks as your search engine. (The easiest thing to do is to download the toolbar.) Every so often when you search, you get "bucks."  These bucks can be redeemed for prizes like gift cards from Amazon, Starbucks, Sephora, etc.

THAT'S how I got my light...with "bucks" redeemed for an Amazon gift card. Rumor has it, several bloggers paid for all their Christmas gifts using Swagbucks last year!!!

Now, if someone refers you, that person gets some "bucks."  Please don't feel like you have to sign up referred by me.  If you'd like to, you can here.  OR, just go the home page and sign up on your own.

Here's what I'm saving up for now:
Nikon D3000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens

I'd love to hear your photography hints or what camera YOU use!

  1. That light works great. I think I'd find it very useful. I joined Swagbucks last year but forget to use it a lot. I would love to get a camera with my Swagbucks too.

  2. Great idea! I was going to use my swagbucks for a new computer but that will take forever! I can get to $88 a piece faster :)

  3. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Canon Powershot SX120, but my best food photos always come from my Canon AE-1. That's a film camera for those who might not know. There's just something about film photos. They always seem so... warm. Idk, I can't describe it. But they always look great.

  7. The difference is amazing and the fact that you got your light through Swagbucks is wonderful.

I too do a lot of decorating and picture taking in the evening. I had never heard of this light and now I think I just might check into Swagbucks once again. (first heard about them from @Tidymom)

Happy *Swagging* towards that new camera Bridge!

  9. I have that same camera! I need to learn how to better use it on manual settings, but it takes such crisp, clear pictures. It's a good pic

  13. I've seen those lights but haven't tried them yet. You may have convinced me!

  14. Hmm, interesting. I just got into photography with a Canon t2i. My husband has some flash umbrellas on stands, but that wouldn't work for me in the kitchen, so I may think about getting some table top lights. I normally end up using my iPhone to take quick pictures of stuff that I bake. Practicallydomestic.com

  15. I literally JUST bought the Nikon D3000 last week and got it yesterday (from Amazon). I tested it out last night, and trust me... it is everything you could hope for in a DSLR. It was hard (read: next to impossible) for me to justify spending $450 on a camera -- my wedding dress only cost me $700 -- but in addition to food pics, my son is getting to quick for my Kodak point and shoot. I'm counting on being able to see the difference in my photos very soon (as soon as I learn to use it)!

  16. Do you think this fancy schmancy light will work with my Kodak instamatic?

Great lighting tips, Bridget..I'm going to try that, and I'm definitely going for swagbucks.

  19. Oh I am just DELIGHTED you posted this little secret!
I am always sad when the SUN goes down and I am still needing to take some shots of what I am cooking!
I wonder how many SWAG~BUCKS that little light cost?
I've been SWAGGIN' it for about a month now.
    Haven't earned a 1000 yet!
But I am sooooo excited when a few Swag~Bucks pop up!
And when I catch a glimpse of Greg searching...
I'll give him the eye and say...
you ARE using SWAG~BUCKS to search...right?
Oh the life of a BLOGGERS hubby!
G and Mr. E need to get together! ;o)
    Happy SWAGGIN my dear!
    I adore you!

  20. I've been debating on getting that light. I'm glad to hear it works. I just bought a Canon EOS and got a flash for it. The flash makes a world of difference. I take most of my pictures in my dark kitchen but you can't tell when I use the flash.

  32. I've been tinkering with using an Ott light and my Canon Rebel. I'm finally learning how to use my camera for food shots (even though I was a photog major at one point in college...eons ago!).

  33. I might just have to put that light on my wish list. I am always cooking at night, but even during the day my kitchen doesn't get enough natural light (there are only 2 windows in my apartment!). The pictures on my blog would dramatically improve with some new equipment like that. - www.delightfulcountrycookin.com

  34. We purchased a D5000 at the beginning of the year and I never realized how much detail I was missing out on! Amazing!

  35. I think we like this post. :) I've heard of Swagbucks but have been dumb and not signed up. I definitely will now. I live surrounded by trees and never have good light coming in my windows so I would always use this light. Think you!

  36. Again, you are so brilliant! I tend to bake at night too and sometimes I just can't wait to dig in so I can get good pictures in a rush the next morning before work. Thanks so much!

  37. WHoops! I've had mine for two years now! I love it. I also have clamp on daylight lamps, too. LOL, the neighbors always know when I'm photographing my food as those lights REALLY light up the kitchen. Good luck on the camera. :) I just got a new one (Canon) and love it!

BTW, I covered my white bounce board with aluminum foil. It takes away the shadow.
