Don't get me wrong...I love a good cookie cutter. In fact, I have a terribly hard time resisting a cute cutter. Anybody care to take a guess at how many I own? {I counted just for you.}Sometimes, though....
- ...the perfect shape is nowhere to be found,
- ...you waited too long to order,
- ...or, $12.95 plus $8.00 shipping just isn't in the budget.

Here's where a template comes in handy.

Making one is simple. Sketch the design you want, trace the shape on a manila folder and cut.
Now, just place it on your dough and trace cut around it with a paring knife. (I always roll my dough on wax paper...a little extra protection for the counter tops if you're using this method.)

Templates are best for simpler cookies. I strongly advise against using a template to make a snowflake or the skyline of Dallas.
Yes, it does take a lot longer to cut out a batch of cookies with a template. I'm guessing about 4 times as long or more. Instead of "boop, boop, boop" with the cutter (yes, my cutters make that sound), you'll be tracing around the shape with a paring knife.

The edges of the cookies will be rougher than if a cookie cutter had been used (see above). You can always gently press the rough parts in, but be careful not to ruin the shape. I tend not to worry about it much.
Custom cookie templates work for me. Head on over to Kristen's to see all the other Works For Me Wednesday ideas!
I want to know....how many cookie cutters do you own? And, any guesses as to how many I have?
Bake at 350's Works for Me Wednesday archives are here.

Wow Great job- I sometimes have to cut out my own cookies too- Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeletegirl I cant even cut paper with scissors-I can not even imagine trying dough with a knife *shudder*
ReplyDelete300
ReplyDeleteI just counted, I have 60 reg and 20 mini cutters. Funny story, about 6 years ago my kids were young and I was cleaning out and thought I am not going to ice cookies again! I threw all my cutters out along with the ones my mom and grand-mom had given me hundreds, they filled a big plastic bin I kept in the garage. I am sick over it now remembering all the cute ones I cannot find. I started decorating cookies again, so any I have I've purchased since then. My guess on how many you have is 300,am I close?
ReplyDeleteI'm going to guess I have a few less than 10. Sad, I know. I really only have Halloween and Christmas cookie cutters, but I've been wanting to collect more! There are so many cute ones out there. I'm going to guess you have 254.
ReplyDelete200 cutters! I have a bunch but always want/need more!
ReplyDeleteI have about 20 cookie cutters. My guess for you is 56. :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, Diane's comment reminded me I do have a few mini cutters, too, but that doesn't put me too far over 10 cutters. Man, I need to do some shopping! I have to start decorating more cookies, especially once my daughter gets older (she's 13 months right now).
ReplyDeleteI'm going to guess 250. The cool thing is that I bet you have used all of them!
ReplyDeleteWell I estimate I have about 150 and my guess is that you have a lot more, say 350.
ReplyDeleteMimi
Your cookies always look beautiful!!! I used a template when I made bee cookies once because I didn't like any of the ready-made bee cutters.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing you have 250 cutters:) I have between 125-150.
Sadly I have a big fat 0 cookie cutters. I know, it's a crime against baking. I don't do well with rolling dough!
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna guess you have AT LEAST 100 cutters!
I'm guessing you have 85. I just counted and I have 37 and just placed an order for a few more =)
ReplyDeleteI second Amanda's comment. But all that extra work makes them TASTE even better.

ReplyDeleteI just found your blog and I love it, what a cute name too! Love love love the bun in the oven cookies, I just might have to make some of those. As far as cookie cutters... I hoard them. HAHA I probably have over 200 different ones! I am guessing you have at least 200 of them!
ReplyDeletewhat a cute post...i do not have that many...the alphabet & numbers & hearts & rounds...love this template idea for easy shapes...
ReplyDeletemy guess you must have @ least 350!!!
I don't have too many now. I used to have a lot and they were left behind accidentally after a move :( so sad! But I am slowly adding more and more!
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing you have a ridiculous number :D
Based on the fact that you make more cookies than I do, and the fact that I have, at the very least, 150, I'll guess... 375?
ReplyDeleteI've been tempted to try my own templates, but it sounds like too much work. We've never met but you already know I'm lazy!
I guess you have 315
ReplyDeleteI probably have around 30.
I did that technique here: http://senovia1.blogspot.com/2009/04/cookie-art.html and I probably have about 200 cookie cutters. I may have to count now! I think you have 524.
ReplyDeleteI honestly have no idea how many i own, but my guess is up there near 100 or so maybe more if I count all the minis. I am sure you have more...say 200?
ReplyDeleteNow I am going to have to go and count them ;)
I love your cookies!
ReplyDeleteI just counted, too. I have 85 large cookie cutters that I use for our cookies-for-donation events, and 20 smaller ones that we use to make practice cookies. I'm guessing you have 200 or more!
ReplyDeleteI'd have to count mine - but I did just order 3 new ones last night AND I've bought 3 new ones in the last week! LOL.........I bet you've got some where in the 200's or more!!
ReplyDelete~TidyMom
I'm guessing 183 cutters... just a random guess :)
ReplyDeleteOk sadly I only own one cookie cutter. It's in the shape of the little Tivo guy because I got it free with some promotion they were doing. I have yet to use it. I can't really find the right occasion where it would be appropriate to give a Tivo shaped cookie...haha.
ReplyDeleteYou probably own a ton of cookie cutter. Maybe 100 or so?
I guess 123.
ReplyDeleteI think I have 40 cutters, and I think you have 275. Where do you keep them all??
ReplyDeleteHum.... I think you have around 350. lol that would be funny. he he
ReplyDeleteI have often resorted to using templates...because I think I only have around 30 cutters... but I always seem to have a rough edge when I do it. :) Better keep practicing!
Blessings-
Amanda
I've never thought about how many cutters I have. I keep the seasonal ones with the seasonal decorations. You know, all the Christmas cutters are with the Christmas decorations. They're all stored in the attic so there's no way I can count them all. I bet I have 150 or more. Wow. That seems like a lot to me. I'm always on the look out for different shapes that I don't have in the clearance aisles after the holidays. You know, a different shaped ghost or tree. I bet you have 500.
ReplyDeleteYou're a genius. PURE genius!!!
ReplyDeleteWow! Such a great idea...that I've never thought of! You bet I'll be trying this. I've tried to make cookies with no cutter before and this is so much easier. Thank you SO much!!!
ReplyDeletePS I don't know how many I have but I'm guessing about 30. I am going to guess that you have 450? :D When do we get to find out the answer...and I'd love to know where you store them.
ReplyDeleteI would have to guess that I have 30-40....all those holiday ones addup you know....:) I would have to guess that you have upwards of 400. There are sooo many cute cutters out there. I wish I had just a smidge of you talent and time to be able to even attempt to decorate cookies liek you do!
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna guess...400?
ReplyDeleteI've got 200+ cutters--but only because 151 of them come from Wilton's 101 cutter set and 50 animal pals!
I think I recall seeing a photo of how neatly organized and sorted your cutters were. I'd say you're easily into the low 200s?
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly, I have 15-20 (I'm not counting the plastic alphabet/numbers set). I'm shocked! I'm guessing you have 375 cookie cutters! At least! You have so inspired me. Can't wait to show off my first cookies based on your techniques and helps!
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing!! I have about 20 or so cutters, but I don't use them all that much -- I'm more of a cookie scoop girl. But I love your cookies!!
ReplyDeleteI have ... about a dozen. You have ... a about a dozen dozen. I'll round that up to 150. Am I close?
ReplyDelete(I don't use mine for cookies. I use them to cut out sandwich shapes for my kids' lunches.)
No idea how many cookie cutters that I have but now many that is for sure. I am THE WORST at making pretty sugar cookies and am very jealous of these beauties that you have shown. :)
ReplyDeleteGood info to know! I own over 100 but I have no idea what they are....would be a good project to make a list. Maybe THEN they would get used :)
ReplyDeleteMy guess for you....252.
In my opinion, a girl can NEVER have enough cookie cutters! But of course, that's coming from a person who is crazy about making and decorating cookies. I must have close to 150 cutters- I'm assuming you have much more than that!
ReplyDeleteOh those are awesome! :D I'm gonna have to try this!
ReplyDeleteI own about 15-20 but I would guess you have 300 cookie cutters.
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait to hear how many cookie cutters you have. I've known people with a lot of cookie cutters. However, I've never known anyone who put them to use as well as you do.
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome! I was just thinking last night about making cookies for our church and wanted to make them using the lettering of our church name, but was having a hard time figuring out how to do that! This will help tremendously. As for my cookies cutters... roughly about 130-140. I recently bought a box of 101 cookie cutters!
ReplyDeleteI have 6 cookie cutters, including the present one I just bought! But I also just inherited a box of them from my MIL...I haven't used or counted those yet, though. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh yeah! And for you, I guess 275. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am gonna guess.....183 for you.
ReplyDeleteI collect cutters - If I counted them all at least 300 probably more bins and bins and bins full. But for some reason - I think you dual purpose them and use templates because you are super smart and don't have OCD about collecting things like I do...so I'm going to say you have 100.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing 68! :) But I think over 100.
ReplyDelete~ingrid
I don't have near enough cookie cutters and I wouldn't even want to dare guess at how many you have! I love this tip, though!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful! Thanks so much! You are so creative and I hope to get to try some of your cookie one day!
ReplyDeleteKim
Your cookies are works of art...how can anyone eat them they look so pretty! I love the bun in the oven ones...so adorable!
ReplyDeleteI sadly have no cookie cutters....I am not really a baking enthusiast. Which causes me pangs of guilt sometimes because my children aren't growing up with cookies. But I do bake homemade from scratch brownies...so maybe I'm not a total flop as a mom :)
As for the number of cookies cutters you have...I would have to guess 326 (nice random number!)
I can see I am going to have to get some cookie cutters for the holidays...can't deprive my poor children forever :)
Blessings!
I've never counted, but my guess is I have 30-40 cookie cutters. I tend to buy in sets though, so I can't say I've used them all!
ReplyDeleteI promise to count them sometime, but I'm guessing something around 200, 250... I know I have all shapes available in Brazil, so now I always ask for traveling friends to bring some for me!
ReplyDeleteI'm very curious to know how many you have.
I'm betting you have 268 cutters.
ReplyDeleteI must have at least that many, but can't be bothered to count.
Recently, I tossed all the plastic ones, which amounted to a full plastic bag's worth (store size...not a zip bag!) and later sorted all the rest and got rid of the duplicates. Then I sorted them by theme and moved the majority to the basement. Because hello, how many cut out cookies do I ever really make?
My cutter collection was started when my mother gave me all of hers. Some are older than I am! I also began buying my own. I would say, between the mini's, medium, and large cutters, I have 50 or so.
ReplyDeleteBut that's only so far!
I have 5 or 6 cutters, plus one set that is nesting scalloped set from Williams-Sonoma so I'm not sure how many of those there are. I am guessing you have 147. That's the number that popped into my head.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have a steady enough hand for that. Gorgeous! I have about 15 cutters...I'm guessing you have either zero or 300+ :)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to go with the old Price is Right strategy and guess one more than whoever guessed the highest.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea how many cookie cutters I own, and 6:30 in the morning before the first cup of coffee is WAY too early to get them out and count them! My dad usually has some copper kicking around in his basement full of treasures and he's been awesome enough to bend me a few pretty great cookie cutters when I've been in need :)
ReplyDeleteBridget!
ReplyDeleteI have one question...
WHEN are you going to write & publish your EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ICED COOKIES book?
XXOOXX
Teresa...have I told you lately that I love you?!? ;)
ReplyDeleteI recently had to make Batman and Tinkerbell cookies for my kids' birthdays and used this same template method. I froze the rolled out dough for a few minutes before cutting them out and the edges came out so smooth you couldn't tell I cut them without a cookie cutter! HTH :-)
ReplyDeleteWow, ladies - I don't have any. GASP! Can you believe it? Before I started reading the comments I would have guessed 18 or so. Now, who know? 265?
ReplyDeleteI think I have around 50 cookie cutters, but I haven't counted lately. Love the cut outs without a cutter idea... I think I'll have to give it a try! Love your cookie tips!
ReplyDeleteI can honestly say, I probably have over a thousand of all shapes and sizes. My daughter will inherit them all! 8-)
ReplyDeleteI know this is an older post and you'll probably never see this but I just wanted to say that if you head to the quilting department of a craft store you'll see they have thin sheets of plastic to make quilting templates with. If you use this to make your cookie cutter templates, you'll be able to re-use them and they'll be a little sturdier than the paper folder idea.
