How to Make Light Bulb Cookies ... on a stick!

There are times in a blogger's life when you're filled with regret. Like, when you have eaten your 18th cookie of the day. Also, when you forget to take pictures of key steps or the finished product.

How to Make Light Bulb Cookies ... on a stick!

So, I present to you a tutorial....missing two pictures. (Yay, me.)

These cookies were made for a trivia night at our school. It's called Facts and Folly (isn't that the cutest?) and the logo is a light bulb. Light bulb cookies were in order.

DIY cookie cutter template
I do not own a lightbulb cookie cutter, so I made a template. You can make templates out of cardstock or a file folder...something sturdy....but I like to make mine from quilting template plastic. (Shout out to the blog reader who gave me this idea ages ago.)

Just find an image, place the plastic over the top, and trace. Then cut out the shape and you have your template.

Here's where I forgot to take picture #1...showing how to use it. All you do is roll the dough to the thickness you'd like, place the template on top and cut with a paring knife. The edges will be a bit rougher than if you'd cut with a cookie cutter, but you can tap them lightly with your finger to smooth them out a bit. Once they're decorated, it doesn't make much difference. :)

For all of the details on make cookies on a stick, please stop over to my post over at The Pioneer Woman Food & Friends.

To decorate the light bulb cookies, you'll need:
  • lightbulb cut-out cookies
  • cookie sticks, if making on-a-stick
  • royal icing, divided into 3 bowls and tinted...you can use any gel paste food coloring (I used...AmeriColor Egg Yellow mixed with Electric Yellow, and Super Black for both the grey and the black.)
  • piping bags
  • couplers and tips (#4, #2 and #1)
  • squeeze bottle
  • toothpicks
  • silver luster dust
  • vodka
  • clean (food-only) paintbrush

Make the cookies on a stick following these instructions

Use a #4 tip to make the base of the lightbulb in grey icing.

With a #2 tip, outline the bulb in yellow.

Thin the yellow icing with water, a bit at a time, stirring with a silicone spatula, until it is the consistency of a thick syrup. You'll want to drop a "ribbon" of icing back into the bowl and have it disappear in a count of "one thousand one, one thousand two." Four is too thick, one is too thin. Count of 2-3 is good. Cover with a damp dishcloth and let sit for several minutes.

Stir gently with a silicone spatula to pop and large air bubbles that have formed. Pour into a squeeze bottle.

Fill in the outlined sections, using a toothpick to guide to the edges and pop large air bubbles.

Let the icing dry about 1 hour.

Use a #1 tip to add the filament detail.

Let the cookies dry uncovered for 6-8 hours, or overnight.

The next day, mix silver luster dust with a bit of vodka. Paint onto the grey area.

Here's the second place I forgot to take a picture...the finished product!!! I waited to stand the cookies up in their box until I arrived at the event and didn't snap a picture.

Tie ribbons on the sticks and press into a styrofoam or floral foam filled container. (Take photo.) ♥
