Sweet on Trader Joe's Saturday: Fleur de Sel Caramel Sauce

trader joe's fleur de sel caramel sauce : part of a weekly review series of tj's desserts
This Saturday, we bring you a review of Trader Joe's Fleur de Sel Caramel Sauce. It's hot outside and we're in full-on ice cream mode around here. Sauce is a bonus.

A 10-ounce jar of caramel sauce cost $3.49.

A mom's (my) take: My first thought on this caramel sauce was...wow, it's beautiful! Thick, shiny, luscious...it looks like an expensive or homemade sauce. Taste-wise, the caramel flavor is very deep and not overly sweet. Yes, there is a little taste of the fleur de sel in here, but not a big punch of it. I definitely appreciate the fact that it's made with sugar, cream, and butter...and NOT with added "caramel coloring." (What is that anyway?) Real ingredients...another reason I love TJ's! On ice cream, the texture remains soft and thick while adding just the right flavor and richness of caramel. Try it on vanilla frozen custard!
Rating straight out of the jar: 4 of 5 stars
Rating on ice cream: 4.5 of 5 stars

A teenager's (Jack's) take: My favorite thing about this sauce is not necessarily the flavor, but the viscosity. I love how it is not runny or too free-flowing, but at the same time doesn't get too hard when put on ice cream. The taste is a wonderful, classic caramel flavor. However, it didn't have any extra "wow factor" or feature that would make me buy it as opposed to another caramel sauce. Trust me though, it is definitely good.

    1. I love this sauce in brownies. You parbake half the brownies and then pour on the sauce with pecans and top it with the other half of the brownie mix and bake it. Nice turtle brownie. Their hot fudge sauce cannot be beat either with great ingredients.

    4. I like the sauce, but I wish it wasn't salty. I am very over the whole "salty caramel" thing.

    5. I use a lot of Trader Joe products -- he doesn't know me from Adam but sometimes I do wear my sunglasses in the store :-) They're prescription and I'm too lazy to switch out to my regular glasses. Hey! Maybe he thinks I'm incognito and is on his best behavior. I've found very few products from that store that I haven't liked -- although I don't purchase his sweets. The salty caramel sounds great, though.

    6. I just spent the morning exploring some other food / baking blogs and I found several recipes for No Churn Ice Cream. Basically you add a can of sweetened condensed milk to heavy cream that has been whipped into stiff peaks. I wonder how that caramel sauce would work to create a salted caramel ice cream. Or perhaps a turtle ice cream with pecans and chocolate chips. Want to develop a recipe for us, Bridget?

    7. Nothing like a delicious Caramel Sauce to keep in the kitchen -- it goes well on ice cream, pie, even fresh fruit! We love the Date Lady’s organic, gluten free, and vegan caramel sauce. It’s a great option if you’re trying to navigate some specific food diets. Let us know if you give it, or another brand, a try!
