Dad's Greenhouse

*this blog post does not contain sugar.  you've been warned.*

When we visited my dad earlier this summer, we got a look at how his greenhouse is coming along.  I know this post is a departure from the usual...sugar and spice and everything fattening.  So many people were interested in the greenhouse when I posted a picture of it on Instagram, I thought I'd give a closer look here.

So, my dad is building a (giant) greenhouse made of vintage windows, doors, and reclaimed wood.

Here it is:

I really can't even comprehend how people build things.  It's so impressive to me.  Dad is good at this stuff.

Let's go in...

I love this old door.

This fan is one that I remember my dad having in the garage ever since I was a little girl.

The back/side.

Some of the glass he's had for ages...I remember my mom decorating with them.  Some were picked up at various places for this project.  Most of the wood is reclaimed.  Dad lives at a lake (yes, there's a lake in Amarillo!), so this is old dock wood.
I guess if we were hipsters, we'd call this an upcycled greenhouse.

These windows will swing open.

I love that my dad is so handy.  He always has been.   I told him that maybe at age 70, he needs to start a new business....kind of like those Treehouse guys on TV. ;)

  1. I didn't realize your dad lived near Lake Meredith! We went there lots as girl scouts as well as Possum Kingdom since good lakes are hard to find in West Texas ;-) Cool greenhouse. That is amazing how he can cobble the pieces together.

  15. I love hearing about this. My daddy is 82 and has swung many a hammer in his day but not many anymore. I would love to see him build something like this but he is bent over at a 45 degree angle now from arthritis, poor guy. Enjoy all those special things about your dad. I am sure you do. Thank you for sharing. I love vintage things.

  19. This is amazing! My dad was handy also and my husband is. Tell your dad that a gal in San Angelo is VERY impressed with his greenhouse. The fan makes me smile. My mother had one in her ceramic studio, in the back yard, to blow out the kiln heat.

  21. Yeah, baby, now that’s a greenhouse!! That old wood has the best vibes, and the various windows with multicolored panels add the perfect touch of whimsy. Any plant that has the good fortune to spend time in that lovingly created space will only be able to thrive.

I’d love to see photos after Dad has filled his terrific creation with plants.
