Bellying Up to the Bar: Pure Barre

Before you go thinking I'm crazy (crazier than usual) blogging about EXERCISE when it's the season for gingerbread cookies...hear me out.

{You may recognize these sayings if you've ever been to Pure Barre class.}

Have you heard of Pure Barre?   I can't wait to tell you about it.  First things first, though.

ONE: I am not an exerciser by nature.  My sister loves to workout....me?  I love to cuddle up with a quilt and a good book.

TWO: I'm sure that if little girls could be kicked out of ballet class, I would have been the first one out.  I'm pigeon-toed and those ballet positions just were not happening for me.

THREE: I am not flexible or coordinated AT ALL.  As a matter of fact, in high school, I tried out for drill team and was rejected all four years.  Oh, that still stings a little...my poor teenage self.

{You get the point.}

I happened to be texting with my adorable friend Terri who told me that Pure Barre has "transformed" her body.  Running had NOT "transformed" my body.  (The only thing lately that has transformed my body is that Haagen-Dazs salted caramel gelato.  Oh my gosh.)

So, I did a little search to see if there was a studio near me.  Um, it was opening the NEXT DAY, in my neighborhood.  I call that a sign.

I tried one of the free classes on opening day.  Y'all...I'll be honest.  I said a few bad words.  Oh, my WORD...how could moving my leg an INCH up and down hurt so much?  When I got home and realized that every muscle in my body felt like Jello, I knew I had to go back.

For 6 weeks, I've been going to Pure Barre.  (You should know...there is no jumping and no dancing, just teeny tiny movements...and lots of "Tucking.")  The results?  The very first thing I noticed a few classes in was that if I stood in a certain light with my arm angled just a certain way, I could see a muscle of some sort.  Now, I can see definition in my arms without standing in that certain light.

I can do a plank push-up.  Not a ton, but I can do them.  I don't think I've ever done a push-up not on my knees in my entire life.

I haven't lost any weight, but I've lost a few inches.  That's something that I never saw with running.

One more thing I love...and this I didn't expect...I love that I can think of NOTHING ELSE but those movements for 55 minutes.  No thinking about cookie designs, or laundry, or what's for dinner that night.

Most of all, I've just grown to love the people at Pure Barre.  The instructors make an effort to learn everyone's name...and they are so encouraging.  I look forward to seeing their smiling faces...even when I know what's coming.  There's no awkwardness, no comparing...just one amazing workout.

When the manager of my local studio (in The Woodlands, TX) asked if I'd like to come in, bring some cookies, and sign some books for the holidays...I said OF COURSE! (How can you not love a work out studio that loves cookies?!?)

The Woodlands studio is offering a FREE class just for you.  The class is this Thursday night (the 12th) at 7:00pm.  You'll need to register online.  I heard through the grapevine that there is a wait-list, but if you sign up, come by and have a cookie, you'll get a pass to take another class for free.  And (AND!), there will be a drawing for a couple of AWESOME prizes for those attending.  (Think: packages of classes!  Woot!)

 {Ah, this is my favorite...the "final 10." ;)}

OK.  Tell me.  Have you taken Pure Barre?  Are you addicted?  Do you want to try it?

  1. I enjoyed reading all about the new Pure Barre studio and the fact that you have fallen in love with this and are seeing positive results. So very encouraging and so less jarring on your body than running. I think it's wonderful that the owners are hosting a book signing for you. Continued success with the classes Bridget and enjoy the book signing. I know everyone is going to enjoy your cookies!

  2. Love it! I am a Pure Barre fanatic! Best workout/therapy session ever. When I started a few years ago, I was telling a friend I had just finished up at Pure Barre and could hardly walk. He thought I meant that I had had one to many cocktails at "Pure Bar". Your cookies are adorable. Merry Christmas!

  3. Adorable! Love the cookie designs and happy you led me to the Barre! (especially the evening there was Beer at the Barre and I finally got to try a St. Arnold's --now THAT is a sign it will be a fun exercise place :) Congratulations on your success with toning and like someone mentioned, this is so much better on your joints than running. Sorry I can't be there for the book signing on Thursday night but will you can save me a "We're here for the finish" cookie? ;)

  4. Man, that's one thing that annoys me about running. I don't lose anything running...in fact, I'm hungry like crazy!

    I've been so curious about this, but I thought since I'm not a dancer (seriously cannot stand up on one leg...I'd fail a sobriety test instantly), there's no way I can do this. Glad to hear that it's not too bad!

  5. I really wish there were a studio close by to me. I do have the videos that I do at home (not as religiously as I should be), but I think I'd see better results if I had the group setting. Let me tell you though, I definitely feel more from those workouts than I ever with anything else. And a studio that loves cookies? I think I need to move there!!!

  6. I love Pure Barre - I started going in Charleston and then moved to Atlanta and continue to go here. The last 7 minutes of abs are always a killer. It really forced me to stop doing only cardio and mix up my workouts.

    This is so cute! I'll have to share it with my Pure Barre peeps :)

  7. I never heard of Pure Barre! I'm willing to try pretty much anything! I love these cookies. How on earth do you write so well on cookies? For the life of me, my letters never come out even halfway decent.

  8. oh the cookies are so adorable! I really enjoy Pure Barre and even taught for a year in my local studio. The 55 minutes goes by really quickly too. I no longer teach and don't get to class as often as I like, as it's a bit pricey. The dvds and those from physique 57 are good too!

  9. I've been addicted to Pure Barre for 5 years - I just turned 50 and it was a good feeling to hit this number in really good shape. I've always wanted to be fit but never made fitness part of my life until I took a barre class - it's fabulous!

  10. I took a ballet class earlier this year and left in tears after 3 classes. The girls were all super skinny and would giggle at other people when we had to jump and do things on the floor. I loved the barre workout part of it though. I wonder if I should try again with a barre class and not a ballet class.

    1. Yes! Try Pure Barre...I think you'll find it so much different from a ballet class. There is no dancing or jumping at all. And everyone is NICE and focused on what they are doing, not anyone else.

    1. I am in my 50's and have been doing Pure Barre 4 times a week for 3 years now. Not only has my body changed (toned, strong and flexible), but I scored in the 90th percentile in a VO2 Walking Test for women my age; before PB I scored in the 30th percentile! So I get cardio benefits without jumping or running. I have friends of all ages at the Barre, but we jokingly have an "over 50 club." You should try it, Karen!

    2. I am addicted and I most certainly fit the "over 50 club". However, when attending classes I don't feel like there is a difference in ages. Everyone focuses on their body and their movements for 55 minutes of awesomeness! <3 Love my Pure Barre studio in Draper, UT. Yeap, we have a studio in Utah! :-)

    3. Being in the Columbia (SC) area I am 38 and I tuck . . . and yes, there are men who do it. Obviously I cross-train with everything else in my workout regimen but it makes my thighs scream and I love doing those poses when celebrating great runs. My best friend and one-time dance partner (yes, I'm single) once taught there and we have fun when we see each other tuck. I see many of my running friends do it and I'm seeing runners (both sexes) do it. One of the greatest things I've done is the "run and tuck," which I did on Thanksgiving when I set a PR in the 5k and then 20 minutes later, in running clothes, was doing Pure Barre.

      (And I didn't start dance until I was 30; the teacher who taught my friend and myself inspired me to try out for her dance team in my late 30's -- 0-for-2 but I hope to do more dance and make it before I turn 40.)

  14. I love it! Some friends of ours own two franchises here in Memphis, but I do it at home with videos since I have no babysitter for my little guy. My legs have never been so toned in my whole life!

  15. Okay.
    I must find a Pure Barre class ASAP.
    Why did I sign up for that half marathon? Pure Barre sounds like the perfect place for me combined with hiking & yoga. Don't you just love when that definition in the muscle begins to shine! ;) Not a better feeling in the world than that!
    You inspire sweet girl!
    So happy you have found such a special place & and new workout that you love and are seeing good results.
    That's how I feel about Bainbridge Yoga House.
    Oh!
    And did I mention.
    Pure Barre plus COOKIES = PERFECT!
    Love you my friend!
    And these cookies are adorable!

  16. I don't think we have Pure Barre in the UK but let me tell you, little girls CAN get thrown out of ballet class! I was that little girl, I was so uncoordinated I hit another little girl in the head with a tambourine..... my mum was quietly asked not to bring me again as it was in no one's best interest.

  17. These are so cute! And a cookie is the best reward for a tough workout.

  18. Wow!! Those cookies are awesome. I tried PB and liked it, but I get more out of doing cardio. Congrats on finding a workout you love!!

  21. I have not heard of Pure Barre but I share your complete enthusiasm for it as I feel the same way about TRX. I have muscles I never knew were there and my body does things I never knew it could do (without any jumping around!) I am intrigued for sure and I'm going to look for one. How lovely for you to be in such a warm caring place too since really, aren't cookies all about love and caring?! Enjoy!

  28. After reading your post Monday, I found a Pure Barre 5 miles from my home (Southlake, TX) and have taken 2 classes. It is TOUGH, but it hurts so good! Thanks for sharing!

  31. Sounds painful. I have taken Cardio Barre and I know what you mean about feeling like jelly. I'm a runner and I left the class feeling like "umm am I even fit?" I do want to try Pure Barre though - more strength, less cardio

  33. Interesting... I've never heard of Pure Barre - but I googled & found that one is "coming soon" near my house. Hoping to try it soon after seeing all of the positive comments. How many times per week do you go?

  34. Ooo this is a great post! And those cookies look very worth an hour of shaking to get to chow down on those.

    A PB studio just opened in my neck of the woods here in Sonoma, and I'm really looking forward to giving it a try. I'm holding out for a few months since I am 8.5 months preggo. Their Mommy Bounce Back program is definitely on the agenda for post-baby!

    I grew up in Houston (Clear Lake area) and I too know the sting of not making the high school drill team! Oh our poor teenage selves is right. Upside? No painful memories of wearing all those sequins. Maybe? Haha. :)

    Thanks for the great post!
